That is astonishing —that he slept in an unheated room all winter. I’ve lived in Illinois and I don’t know how someone wouldn’t freeze to death some nights feather beds or not.

Yes, it’s hard to fathom those bitter cold nights without any heat. My dad, who grew up during the Great Depression, has told me similar stories — no insulation, no wood heat until morning, buried under blankets.
