This is one of the many points in favor of horses as mode of transportation. If their owner got into the buggy drunk, more often than not the horses knew the way home. And barring anything spooking them on the road, no one got hurt.
In my mother's family's hometown of Newport, Tipperary, there was a market day when farmers would come to town to buy or sell cattle. After the auction was done, they would pen their cows on the side streets and head to O'Sullivan's Pub. They would stay at O'Sullivan's until closing time. Then they would unpen their cows and walk home, sometimes a distance of over 10 miles, in the pitch dark. I guess you could say Irish cows can be "designated drivers" too!
